Leucadendron

When I find a Leucandendron it’s difficult for me to pass it up. If you don’t come right up to them you might not notice the color, but honestly, they are wonderful. Today I landed at a house with absolutely spectacular plants and I had a wonderful time with the camera. Trouble is, I’m not sure just which shot of this particular bit I like best. For now I’ll share this first one.

First Shot

I had a nice, albeit a bit too warm, six mile walk today. I finally stopped to use the camera when I happened upon a flower garden I have seen for several years and look forward to visiting. This time the homeowner came out as I was shooting and we chatted a brief time. I could tell he felt the need to say that they sacrifice flushing toilets so they can water the garden: I suspect many of us feel the need to justify having gardens with the drought and I’m just guessing he wanted to be sure I knew they weren’t overusing water. Perhaps he even thought I’d report him. Who knows? Sad times when it comes to that sort of thing. In any case, this is the first shot and I have many more that I’m looking forward to viewing. I’m thinking I just might have a few keepers!

Another From Yesterday

This is another flower from yesterday’s little trek to the Santa Cruz Mountains to coach some super oboists. I was surprised to see the camp full of what I think of as “city flowers”. I found very few that seemed like the typical Santa Cruz natives. Maybe I’m just clueless about what grows naturally there, though. I suppose I should read up on that.

Thinking of our very little time together, I only wish I could have had a few days with the musicians rather than a few hours: I like getting to know students a bit more so we have a connection. The great thing, though, is that all three are studying with excellent instructors (all of whom I know — one I’ve known for over forty years, believe it or not!). An oboist without a private instructor is like … well … a day without chocolate.

Okay … walk time. I hope you enjoy this colorful geranium.
